The Role of NWA Master Naturalists
This sanctuary came to life thanks to the Northwest Arkansas Master Naturalists, a group of trained volunteers who dedicate their time to environmental education and conservation.
As part of their certification program, Master Naturalists complete weekly classes on ecology, wildlife, geology, and more. They’re also encouraged to lead community-focused projects. When they realized there were no firefly sanctuaries in Arkansas, they partnered with the Peel Compton Foundation to change that. Their passion and vision helped shine a light on this often-overlooked insect and its fragile habitat.
Experience the Fireflies
Every summer, Coler hosts a free Firefly Walks series led by the NWA Master Naturalists. These events offer a rare chance to experience fireflies in their natural environment and learn more about their life cycle, habitat, and conservation needs.
